The Quarterly 2012

On the 27th of November last year, Dr Karen Owen and Professor Gavin Frost traversed the Pacific to attend the Hong Kong College of Community Medicine (HKCCM) Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) and Conferment Ceremony on behalf of RACMA. The theme of the ASM was "Global Public Health Challenges" and was held at the Hong Kong Academy of medicine Jockey Club Building.

The opening ceremony started things off with officiating guest Dr York Chow, Secretary for Food and Health, Government of the HKSAR. Three keynote speakers started each section of the program. The first was "Public health in a changing world?" from Professor Lindsey Davies, President Faculty of Public Health, Royal Colleges of Physicians of the United Kingdom. After morning tea, Mr KM Cheng, Senior Physicist in Charge, Radiation Health Unity, Department of Health, The HKSAR delivered a stirring address on "Major nuclear plant incidents and public health". After lunch was "Food safety challenges in mainland China with global impacts" by Professor Chen Junshi, Senior Research Professor, Institute of Nutrition and Food Safety, Chinese Centre for Diseases Control and Prevention.

The remainder of the program was punctuated by oral presentations from Fellows, students and researchers from the School of Public Health and School of Nursing, at the University of Hong Kong and the Centre for Health Protection at the Department of Health. Topics covered a diverse number of subjects such as: equity and access to health care, community project outcomes, cost effective healthcare initiatives, epidemic outbreaks, adolescent behaviour and other public health issues. The scientific meeting closed and then delegates were treated to a cocktail reception prior to the Conferment Ceremony.

The Conferment Ceremony started with a procession of the stage party, introduction of the members of the party and then the welcome address by the HKCCM President Dr SP Mak. Professor Chen Junshi was inducted as an Honorary Fellow of the College. The award of the Honorary Fellowship was then followed by the award of Fellowship to 18 graduands and Associate Fellowship to two graduands. Various prizes were then awarded for outstanding candidates, best paper, best poster and the EK Yeoh gold medallion for the orator. This year the EK Yeoh Oration was delivered by Professor Anthony Johnson Hedley on "Achieving environmental justice: what should be the role of public health?"

The meeting and ceremony were both a resounding success and greatly enjoyed by our RACMA representatives. Their attendance allowed the opportunity to reunite and strengthen the close relationship of our respective Colleges.
