The Quarterly 2012

New Members
My name is Alastair Mah, and I am the new Candidate Director on the RACMA Board, as well as Chair of the Candidate Advisory Committee (CAC).

We have noted that in the past, the CAC has had a relatively low profile amongst the Candidates, as well as the College as a whole. Therefore in order to make ourselves more visible we will be posting jurisdictional representative profiles on the College website, replete with photos and contact details.

We aim to provide Candidates with a voice and profile. If Candidates have any issues that they are concerned about, or suggestions and contributions that they would like to make, please do not hesitate to contact your jurisdictional representative or myself directly.

The CAC met for the first time this year on 3 Feb 2012. We welcomed new Candidate representatives Dr Leah Barrett-Beck (Queensland) and Dr Svetlana Anderson (Victoria). The Committee would also like to thank the contributions of outgoing Candidate representatives Dr Kirsten Price, Dr Russell D'Souza and Dr Anjali Dhulia.

Recent Changes
The proposed change in exam results feedback was discussed and there were no objections. The Committee agreed that while there were no obvious detriments with the new format. The recommendation from the Committee was that the process be evaluated after a one year period and that the results be made available within 48 hours if possible.

The new Medical Leadership and Management Curriculum was also discussed, with the Committee fully supporting the new innovations such as research and Indigenous Health. The recommendation from the Committee was that during the transition phase the College must ensure Candidates are given sufficient notice of any change.

Annual Scientific Conference
With the upcoming Annual Scientific Meeting “Benefitting from the Boom: Challenges for the Healthcare System” being held 5-7th of September in Perth, the National Scientific Program Committee has formally appointed Western Australian Candidate Dr Daniel Heredia to join the Committee.

I would also like to personally encourage Candidates to consider submitting their work for presentation at the conference, whether in the form of posters or oral presentations. It is a great opportunity to both share your experiences as well as raise your profile within the College.

I hope to meet you at our College’s major event of the year in September!

Dr Alistair Mah
Chair, RACMA Candidate Advisory Committee
